Please understand that the sample size here–one comparison–is quite limited :). That said, I am always doing my best. It would not shock me to see that in the long run, cropped images from the 1D X and the 5D III are actually superior in terms of image quality, fine feather detail, and noise than images from the 7D II. Nor would it surprise me if the 7D II images turn out to be clearly best. Stay tuned.

There are many who doubt that the Canon EOS-7D Mark II is as good as I say it is. And there are many more who feel that a Series II super-telephoto lens and a Series III 2X TC (Extender) cannot make sharp images

I humbly beg to disagree and as proof, offer the 100% view of the face detail of the vulture (above). Note the sharpness of the individual raccoon hairs, the sharpness of the eye, the detail in the skin, and even the definition in the starburst sun eye highlight….

Verdict Dxo Mark sur le capteur :

On paper, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II looks to be a solid choice for sports and action photographers, but its sensor performance is somewhat behind the best in class, at least at low ISOs. Relatively high noise, less discriminating color, and below-average DR at base ISO all continue to hold back Canon sensors against rivals, but that’s not the case at higher sensitivities. In fact, when light levels fall, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II performs competitively, even surpassing rivals slightly. If Canon could only address performance at base and low ISO, the EOS 7D Mk II would make a thoroughly convincing all-round choice, but in this category the Sony A77 II looks to be the more compelling option.


En clair, on retrouve la situation que j'avais illustrée avec des photos anonymisées à l'époque 7D vs A77 : en APS-C haut de gamme, en bas ISO, Canon fait moins bien que Sony mais il fait légèrement mieux en haut.

DxO ne teste pas l'AF et ne tient pas compte de la gamme optique.
